EXCLUSIVELY Adamson for Austin’s Big House Sound
July 22, 2008
Big House Sound Inc. (BHS), founded in 1991 by Roy Kircher and Rod Nielsen, has been providing top-flight sound reinforcement to Austin, Texas, the "Live Music Capital of the World" for the past 17 years. Both Kircher and Nielsen built BHS on a respect for their clients’ needs for quality audio in the area. This basic principle has made BHS the largest business of its type in Austin, with a reputation growing both regionally and nationally. Specializing in production services for concerts and corporate events, BHS recently added 16 Adamson M15 monitors, 12 Adamson T21 Subs, 24 Y10’s and 24 Y18’s to their already extensive inventory of Adamson products.
BHS has been providing sound services in Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and up & down Interstate 35 since 1992. The very first sound system the company purchased was an 8-box Adamson MH225 & S218 system, which today consists of 48 MH225, B2 and S218’s which are still in use today. Having never owned another manufactures box, Kircher is quick to comment on BHS’ allegiance to Adamson speakers: “When Rod and I first got together I was out on the road and heard an Adamson MH225 rig. a small system of maybe three stacks a side. It sounded great! The midrange blended so well with the hi’s that even when you stood 8 feet in front of it system it was like smooth wall of sound. I think the mid driver was the selling point for me. I mixed on a lot of systems, but the Adamson mids jumps out at you and that bandwidth never runs out of head room. To date, we haven’t come across a system that can keep up with the Adamson mid-range.”
BHS’s Adamson inventory has grown significantly over the years; adding SX’s and a RA system in 1998, and then upgrading to the Y-Axis Line in 2000. Now with the added T-21 Subs and M15 Monitors, their inventory includes practically every Adamson box ever made, and the BHS shop could practically be considered an Adamson museum.
With main focus on live events, BHS are arguably the “Kings” of local one-offs. “We take three to four systems and set them up, take them down, and move them across the street three to four times a week. We do lots of symphony events in Austin as well as in San Antonio, then turn around and do a big R & B or a Rock show at Stubb's BBQ or an arena up the road. We only do corporate events when bands are involved -we come in with monitor and FOH gear that the local AV companies can't handle, and make it work. It's really from one extreme to another.”
Apart from live events, BHS also has their hands in the area of consulting and installing. “We do a lot of installs, but mainly churches. We also fix a lot of other people’s installs” Kircher says. ”People will come out to our live shows and ask us to consult with them about their system to bring it up to speed with what they heard there.”
BHS has had the opportunity to work with many different events including SXSW for the past 17 years, usually about 3 stages a year at Austin City Limits Music Festival since they started in 2002. “Last year we had Y10’s on the 2 smaller stages and a 24 box Y18 system with T-21 Subs on the larger stage which just blew everyone away.” In the future BHS hopes to break into National Touring; should help should help that they’ve just added Lab.Gruppen PLMs to be used with their entire line-array inventory.
