A Nouveau System for Le Nouveau Casino
April 4, 2007
Le Nouveau Casino is a concert club located in Paris, France. The historic venue was constructed in 1850, and was originally a concert-café. In 1910 it was turned into a cinema and became renowned for hosting theatre performances. The concert hall saw its debut in 1999 with the initiative and funding by the managers of the Café Charbon to which it is attached. With the arrival of Marie-Pierre Bonniol in 2000, Le Nouveau Casino defined its artistic vocation and structure, and hosted the inaugural concert in June 2001 as it re-opened as a club, multimedia gallery and a concert venue under its current name, Le Nouveau Casino.
With a capacity for 400 people, the multipurpose venue is used for anything from intimate Jazz, Rock and Electro concerts to DJ Sets as a dance club. It boasts above average acoustics for a design of its age, and has grown to become one of the more prominent club and concert venues in Paris.
It was recently determined that they would need to improve their outdated sound system. The existing system had served them well over the years, but it was much too harsh and lacked distinction and coherence. A shootout between 5 of the world’s top audio companies in the world was arranged. Audiolite based in Landernau, best know for doing sound production for the massive yearly “Les Vieilles Charrues” music festival, went to the shootout bringing in Adamson’ SpekTrix True Line Source Technology.
Audiolite won the shootout and the final contract. The system for the venue was designed by DV2’s Julien Poirot using Adamson’s Shooter software. The main arrays are comprised of one SpekTrix 5-degree enclosure and three SpekTrix Wave 15-degree enclosures per side, providing excellent coverage for the length of the club, which sits at about 18 meters (59ft), with the Waves suitably shortening the throw. The SpekTrix Lines 120 degree horizontal coverage is more than sufficient for the narrow space which measures 8m (26.2ft), resulting in thorough coverage throughout the listening area. A single LX10 per side is used as lip fills on the stage, in order to warm up the first meter (3.2ft) in front of the stage, and two MH121.5’s are used as flown backfills for a night-club configuration when applicable. The main arrays hang L & R above of the stage, which takes up the entire width of the venue, at a height of about 1.89m (6.2ft) to the bottom of the array, leaving a sufficient amount of clearance even for taller performers. The system is powered with Lab.gruppen’s new fP10000Q’s and effectively controlled with Lab.gruppen’s Nomad Link Bridge NLB60E, one XTA’s DP448 and DP446’s. To maximize the main floor space, the FOH is unconventionally placed up on a balcony, but since the room simply sounds good, no matter where one’s listening, it hasn’t been a problem to visiting sound engineers. This result is achieved with the use of a small a line-array configuration rather than a non-directive conventional set-up in a room this size.
Open every day, the Nouveau Casino has already welcomed to its stage the likes of Rubin Steiner, Stereolab, Ready Made, Chloé, Dave Clark, Nathan Fake, and Kid Loco.
